City Girl
Why must the city be so unkind?
What did I ever do to it?
Why must it punish me for being single?
Why must I pay twice as much
for an apartment twice as small
as those of my friends living in
the blissful state of cohabitation?
Less money.
More room.
And sex.
Just one of those.
I'd take just one of those.
But instead,
I am confined to a studio
with a rent I can't afford
in bed alone
in my sleeping alcove
and watching cable TV--
a $21.95-a-month luxury
that I have to pay for
all by myself,
as long as I am
all by myself.
Why must the city be so unkind?
