There's a torque/power graph as well. A few interesting tidbits: - Valves are smaller, valve lift reduced .005 inch (intake), .007 inch (exhaust) (compared to R1100RS. Camshaft timing 256 degrees compared to 300 for the R1100RS. Intake tracts .47 in. smaller. - New five speed gearbox derived from the K1200RS unit. - Header pipes are double-walled to minimize blueing - Motronic MA 2.4 computer, automatic choke - Flywheel weight has been increased to provide a smoother running engine - Exhaust is stainless steel with hi-gloss chrome. - Hydraulic clutch - First and second gears are short, fifth is tall for cruisin'. - Driveshaft has two universal joints and a torsion damper - A 64.96 inch wheelbase (!!!) - Optional low handlebar that looks like the USA high bar on a slash two. All it needs is a set of Hella bar-end signals. - Retro style speedometer face - 50's look - Handpainted pinstripes, two coas of clear topcoat on the paint - 17 Litre tank - You can cruise from 31 mph to 100 mph in 5th gear. Now, install a set of Enduro bags and a pair of R69S mufflers... Date: Sun, 13 Jul 1997 02:29:25 GMT Reply-To: **NOSPAM**cholkoNoSpam@NoSpammindspring.com (Christopher Holko) Well I went for the "big" test ride... took the new cruiser (r1200c) for= a 5 mile tour of norcross... Its a very nice machine, though the bumps do come through the seat a = little strongly. =20 Likes, Styling, hey... this is a cruiser that is ALL BMW. No sell out here. = Did notice that with the engine punched out to 1200c they added a hydraulic clutch! The gear box still had the first gear clunk, but with the = torque of this machine it could get by with just two gears, low and high! The chrome is nice looking without being too gaudy, though I am quite = sure there will be people piling it on, there are areas of the bike that = scream "Chrome me!" The exhaust note sounds really great while riding, its = really unremarkable standing alongside it though. One other good point, I was = the first of the open house people to ride it... Nit-picks... First, the passenger pillon is a joke, and it should not cost extra to get a real seat. As it stands its a solo bike, unless you don't like someone - make them a passenger! The riders seat is not = great, it is too thin. The bumps of the road really come through. The = ape-hanger handlebars have got to go. They told me that there are two sets of handlebars for this bike. Other annoyance.. the shifter does was not properly set to accomadate boots with tall toes (square type). =20 What was odd was that I noticed some heat from the right side through my boots but not the left. The absence of the tach or gear indicator at = first got me, but after riding it I became very aware that this bike needs neither. Its not to be ridden like the current R bikes, this is a lazy sunday riders. While I prefer my r1100rtl for the open road, I could really see cruising the neighboorhoods and mountain areas of Georgia on = this bike. On a sad pathetic note, while at the open house someone took the left = side mirror/turn signal piece of my bike and swapped it with theirs. My = friend noticed it when he went to get something from his bike. My "new" turn signal housing is really scratched up. So if anyone in the area sees a sienna red R1100RTL with a scratched up left side but a perfect turn signal/mirror assembly tell John at Blue Moon. I am really pissed about this, even more pissed when Blue Moon basically told me ... 50 bucks = and we'll paint it. Geez... it was on their lot, least of all they could do= is offer to do it cheaply! The 'surging' was greatly reduced, anyone that's ridden it care to comment. Does this mean that next years R series are going to get this and the improved tranny? Also a throw away line in 'Motorrad' said that the R1200S is coming next year, can't wait. On another site (www.lubricants.dupont.com) I was reading about the new greases/oils available. They're claiming that it sticks itself to the metal surface. Does this mean the end to all those interminable 'spline-lube' threads? Someone mentioned the rough idle when test riding during the recent open house at Hebert's Cycles (Baton Rouge). Someone then said it was supposed to be the connecting rod journals were offset on the crank and were *not* 180 degrees apart like a boxer should be. Supposedly BMW's research into what cruiser owners liked about them kept pointing to the shake, rattle, and roll. So BMW figured they would have to add some shake and rattle if it were to sell enough to pay for itself. But then, my kids were at the table with me playing dueling dinosaurs and I may have heard wrong. What say ye, oh wise and benevolent Beemer Gurus? Could a 180 degree crank fix this problem? Will I ever be able to buy an R1200RT that idles and shifts smoothly? ==== During the Tucson press intro ride, I too noticed the Cruiser shook a lot more at idle and seemed to have a lower idle speed than my RS. I later asked Wolfgang Durheimer about this and whether the extra low idle and accompanying shaking (caused by a lower idle speed) was intended (a la HD). "Yes" was the answer! Does BMW make the cruiser in a non-silver plated version? The engine covers were brushed instead of polished. Maybe the dealer had to replace the original parts." What you saw were painted valve covers. According to my local dealer (A&S BMW, Sacramento), the chrome valve covers have been in short supply and many cruisers have been shipped with standard valve covers like those used on the other R-bikes. BMW is separately shipping chrome covers as they become available and the dealers are swapping them.
