Three years ago I had traded for an 85 KRS and couldn't ride it any distance due to my carpal tunneled wrists. I put a set of K75 handlebars on the bike, purchased from Bob's. I anticipated a real wiring nightmare with higher bars but in its infinite wisdom the BMW gurus saw fit to use the same wiring harness for the RS and the LT. The harness was looped back on itself under the tank and, when straightened, resulted in plenty of extra length. The only problem was the brake line from the master cylinder which I had to replace with a slightly longer item. I believe I also cut down the plastic cover which mounts between the handlebar bends. Along with a Parabellum system windscreen the bike was extremely rideable. In fact, I liked the half-fairing much better than my fully faired RRT as it was cooler in the summer. My K bike cames with some strange non-BMW bar that creates the most upright position that you could imagine. I am looking for stock bars that will work for a 91 K100RS (must accomadate heated grips) Maybe someone who's converted away from stock bars wants to sell theirs??? That's what I did on my K100RS. Loved them, and so does a number of friends that have changed to K75C bars. > >- Where's the best place to get these? (Default choice: >Competition Accessories.) I just bought them from Kari at Cal BMW. Check with Eurotech (sp) for a used set. >- Will I need a new clutch/throttle cable, or anything else along >these lines? (Ted Verrill's how-to page covers a K75S >conversion, and he didn't need them. But this is a K100RS, different?) I bought both throttle and clutch cables. Only needed the throttle, so I kept the clutch cable as a spare. >- I saw a guy's K100 down at CalBMW the other day, he had >replaced the bars and had to chop pieces off the "center" pad to >get it to fit back on. Is there a tidier solution? Sure there is, you buy the K75C pad that was made for the bars. It adds one additional rocker switch position which can be helpful and makes it all look like that's the way it came from the factory. >- Anything tricky I need to watch out for? Putting the new throttle cable in requires the fingers of a monkey, can be frustrating, but if I can do it with ten thumbs on my hands, I'm sure you can too. Biggest problem I had was drilling the bars for my heated grips, but that is pretty straight forward if you can drill a hole in a metal bar. I ended up with R90S bars which work with the stock '85 KRS brake hose and cables. The bars are not angled rearward nearly as much as the KRS bars. They are slightly wider and I had to reshape the brackets below the center pad, but I am very satisfied. They are also about 1/2" higher. I have since added heated grips. I actually got mine from Cal BMW. However, you need to be sure to specify that you need the ones for heated hand grips or you will need to do a little cutting (like I did). :- - Will I need a new clutch/throttle cable, or anything else along :these lines? I didn't need new lines, but I did reroute the clutch cable to give a little more room. The Choke cable is a little tight when fully turned, and I may eventually change that with a longer one. :- - I saw a guy's K100 down at CalBMW the other day, he had :replaced the bars and had to chop pieces off the "center" pad to :get it to fit back on. Is there a tidier solution? I too had to do some hacking on the pad. I was a little disappointed with having to do this. The reason is the key switch is permantly mounted there and can not be raised. However I was told that on the older K's that do not have the steering lock integrated with the ignition, you can raise it and not have to to the cutting. :- - Anything tricky I need to watch out for? Not really, just plan on taking your time. They're made for cycling, but will fit OVER the standard BMW grips. (I cut the ends off, wet them in water, and stretched and slid them over my R1100RTL's heated grips. Perfect! And, best of all - no more "tingling" or numb hands. Give it a try! They're available clear or in assorted colors including black, blue, and red. Russ Miller
