Had it for 7 seasons - saw the R11RT and had to have it. Sold to someone on the west side of MI. The K75 was the bike that got me reinterested in motorcycles. 82 Suz. GS650G 19 Good power, first new bike. Not very reassuring above 80 MPH. Totaled, along with my left knee, Ann Arbor 10/84. RIP. First totally new bike. 80 Honda Hondamatic 17 Yes, an automatic. In retrospect, it was really cool. Two speed 400cc, Red. I think it got it for $900 - it had 400 miles on it. Really hard on engine oil as it used it in the trans, too - would get really hot on the highway. 78 Suz. TS125 15 If you were careful, you could ride the dirt roads in my part of the state. This was a good bike. Street legal, OK offroad, good power, cheap to operate. 70 Hon. CT90E 12 First real bike. Had the low range and hi range selectable gearbox. Bald tires, leaked oil. First wipeout when the chain broke and wrapped itself around the axle (can you say low-side?). Rode that thing in circles in a field for hours on end... My God, how time flies... Fond memories, fun bike, but it handled like a b*tch on the street, thus providing a good intro to moderate road-rash... 80 Bultaco Streaker 123 16 Forgotten 2-stroke street bike. Had a Ducati like multi-tubular chassis and stuck to the street like on rails. It was a *blast*. Bultaco had one of those racing series on this bike, and people like Sito Pons and Carlos Cardus grew in that series. My brother-in-law wrapped it around a telephone pole in '84 or so, the collective disappointment being he didn't hurt himself much in the process. No, we didn't like him. 82 Laverda 500 Montjuic 19 What a bike. I remember sitting in the garage half the night, just looking at it, the day I got it. When you set it up right (tire pressures, good threads etc) and took care of it, it was the best ride I've ever had. It was light and had a great engine, and the sound... ah. I was determined to keep this bike forever, but I gave it to a friend back in '91 for a short ride, and neither rider nor bike returned from that fateful ride in good shape. Throughout his 2-year recovery, though, my friend said "It was a *fun* ride while it lasted". He's doing great these days, by the way, and back on the saddle on a R1100 RS. 84 Yamaha 350 2-stroker 20 Everybody has great memories of this bike, but I got rid of it real quickly. Maybe mine was a bit trashed (I got it at a great price), but it was horrible, oiling up everything surrounding it, and it handled like a b*tch compared to the Laverda. I got rid of it very quickly, making some $ in the process. 84 BMW R45 21 It was a beetle on wheels. This was the German insurance friendly version with 27 horsepower - can you say *boring*?? It was a good low budget bike, though. But *slow*. Needless to say, I peppered it up quite a bit, and made it driveable. The police confiscated it, as they stopped me for "reckless driving" when I was doing a wheelie, and they got suspicious when they saw "detuned for 27 horsepower" on the registration. I didn't have the $ to pay the fine as a student -I had wisely invested in tuning the bike-, and considering my driving license got revoked for half a friggin' year, it didn't look like a great investment right away, so they kept it. 90 Honda CB1000 27 Solid and fun bike. But lacking in real personality. Interestingly, I was dating this great woman at the same time - both were: nice to look at by universal standards, reliable, dependable, solid -uhm- performers when it came to fun, powerful... and yet, they didn't get my adrenaline really started, so I moved on after a 4 year UJM stint and near-marriage I decided to move on and experience more excitement... 94 Ducati 900SS 30 Can you say "30" crisis... There I was, entering the big "3" and I reverted to both a bike-style I had outgrown and got myself a girlfriend that was 19 years old. Lasted 2 years on both counts. Then I figured out I wanted fun with some dependability and maturity. The 900SS is a good bike, but there's always something a bit wrong with it. Don't even try driving it when it rains a lot, the electrics are temeramental. So my Ducati experience was that all those little prejudices are totally true. You get to know the complete family history of the guys in the service department. And, as a teenager, you don't mind hanging around the shop quite a bit. As a busier gorwn-up, damn, it gets a bit wearing on the nerves. 96 BMW R1100 R 33 It was all I ever expected from a bike. You can commute, you can wheelie (yes you can), you can go for a long trip, you can tear up the tarmac on the backroads and lean it until you swear the cylinder heads *must* be touching the ground any second. High fun-factor, and it's a great feeling to know you can rely on the machine. Now I am looking for a woman that has a similar character, albeit maybe a more universally appealing design. And she shouldn't weigh near 500lbs - these bikes are a bit porky, that's my *only* complaint.. :-) ...pablo ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Dec 97 13:41:45 -0500 From: Harris_Gary/ny_technologyNoSpam@NoSpamexplorer.siny.com Subject: BMW: Bikes we've had - Pablo Reverts... >94 Ducati 900SS 30 >Can you say "30" crisis... No doubt about it - one of the most beautiful bikes > ever built. Classic and still very sporty-looking. You just have to keep your eye out for it. That's how I got mine earlier this year... 1981 R65. At age 23, I bought my first bike. A friend had gotten me interested in bikes the year before, on a Yamaha 175 enduro and a Suzuki GS650. I had never had much interest in bikes until then. It's a fever, and it hasn't broken even yet. 1967 Montgomery Wards Riverside 350 single. Really built by Benelli. I got it for free, had to fix the shifter pawl in the transmission. I actually got it for my wife, but it scared her off instead. (Really not too surprising...) But, it's what I rode around for a couple of months after I got out of the cast when my R65 was totalled with 55k showing, in 1985. Once I got my next bike, I gave this to a friend for his wife. By the time I found the title and signed it over, it was already in yet another home... 1985 R80S. I was 27 and it was a great bike. I put 92k on it in 9 years. I commuted and toured on it, winter and summer. I would have kept it, but I really had to have a new R11RS. So... The guy who bought it contacted me a year later; he was divorcing and moving out of state and had lost the title, would I sign in front of a notary that he had bought it? He told me it was completely apart. I didn't want to hear any more. 1961 R60/2. A friend of a friend owned it in the early 70s. He took it apart to do some sort of maintenance, and then it never went together. He gave it to my friend -- the one who introduced me to motorcycling -- as a birthday present: "Happy Birthday! Here's a motorcycle, some assembly required!" Well, it didn't go together any better at his house, and when he moved, I inherited it. The frame, motor, tranny, and five boxes of parts followed me around for most of a decade, and then I just put it together in my spare time, and voila! I had a second bike. I restored it two years ago, and now ride it around when it doesn't look like it'll rain. 1994 R1100RSA. It was a year old demo with 3k on it, and the dealer made me a great offer. Now it has 80k on it in only 3.5 years. 1975 R90S silver smoke. Once you have two bikes, the only thing better is three, right? When this came in as a trade in on a K12 at Cascade BMW, I was pretty excited about it. It's completely stock (no, Phactory Phil, I never did have it dual plugged! ;-) except for that damn acorn nut on the right lower shock mount and the upgraded quartz clock internals for the fairing mounted clock. I'm going to ride this down to LA and leave it there for winter get aways... --Darryl Richman Date: Tue, 9 Dec 1997 14:39:32 -0800 (PST) From: David Brick Subject: BMW: bike's i've owned 1955 R50 1964 R50 1960 R69 1965 R69S 1983 R65 1987 FJ1200 (what?) 1988 K75S 1996 R11RSL Kind of a one-note samba. Here's my list: 1959 Sears Cushman Scooter 1963 Yamaha 50 1964 Honda C110 50cc 5-speed (first year) 1962 Ducati 98 (OHV single) 1964 Yamaha YA125 1966 Honda CB160 1967 Yamaha 350 1969 Yamaha 360 (2-stroke dirt bike; terrifying to ride) 1971 CZ 380 (First "real" MX bike) 1973 Honda CR250 1972 Suzuki TM250 1973 Yamaha MX 250 1974 Montesa VR250 "Vehkonnen Replica" 1974 Suzuki TM400 1972 Suzuki TM400 1974 Bultaco 360 Pursang 1976 Yamaha IT400 (rode the last California Greenhorn Enduro on it - nearly killed me) 1974 Suzuki 250 Trials 1975 Suzuki PE250B 1976 Hercules 175 ISDT 1972 Yamaha TT500 1978 Honda CR250 1979 Maico 450 Enduro 1981 Honda XR200 1977 Suzuki PE175 1976 KTM 250XC 1985 Honda XR350 1984 Husqvarna 400XC 1987 Honda XR250R 1990 KTM 250EXC 1990 Honda XR250R 1991 KTM 250EXC 1992 Honda NT650 Hawk GT 1995 BMW R1100RSL 1993 BMW R100GSPD 1978 BMW R100RS 1997 BMW R1100GS Whew! There were probably a few that passed in and out of my hands so fast I don't remember them, and somewhere back there in the early 70's, there a few "shop rides" that I had to race. Now, to add something to the thread, here's a list of my "most desired" machines I ever came in contact with and couldn't have: 1963 (?) Honda CB125 Benly - OHC twin-cylinder 125; a friend's brother had one. 1963 Honda CR110 Benly - DOHC 50cc; another friend had one of these - major exotic! 1966 Victoria "Bergmeister" - rare German 350 twin; high school acquaintance's father brought it back from Germany 1962 Jawa 250 Six Days - enclosed chain, twin-pipes, purpose-built bike the local Honda-Triumph dealer owned and ran enduroes on; absolutely the finest off-roader of its day. 1972 Maico 400 "Adolph Weil" - not a replica, the actual one he rode in the 1972 Trans-AMA series; I was on the track with him (as a support class rider), and it was the fastest, most exotic bike of its day. They wouldn't let us photograph them. 1972 Husqvarna 4?? - Hekki Mikkola (Finnish 500cc World Champ) passed me so fast in three-foot deep sand whoops at Orlando that I am convinced to this day that there was something "special" about the suspension on that bike, years before suspension became the focus of off-road designers. 1972 Suzuki RM370 - Roger DeCoster rode several iterations to World 500cc Championships. I was working for Suzuki at the time and saw them up-close in the Hammamatsu race shop. Unobtanium. 1978-80 Hallman/Aberg TT500 frame kit - Torsten Hallman Racing sold a few dozen special frames for the TT500 engine with long-travel suspension. Bengt Aberg used one to win the Luxembourg 500 GP in 1979 or 80, the first four-stroke GP win in motocross since 1962. If anyone out there knows of one of these for sale, let me know, I want to go Vintage MX racing. 1987(?) Honda RC370 "Ribi Fork" - Roger DeCoster rode this bike in several championship races; the exotic fork design was purchased from a Belgian designer by Honda and made for the 500 class bike. It had three separate sections that hinged, folding up as the wheel went through its travel. Last time I saw it, it was on display in Honda's Dallas Zone office. I think only one or two were ever made. 1996 Honda NR500 "Oval Piston" - I was in the Honda headquarters in Torrance two years ago when one of the only ones ever imported to the U.S. was delivered to Michael Mann, producer of "Miami Vice". Beyond unobtanium! I could go on and on, but that's enough for now. Here goes, all dates approximate due to ageing brain and writing this 5000 miles from home and records. 1955 BSA Bantam. Age 13. Group purchase with 4 mates - we each contributed 1 pound. Ex Post Office messenger bike with a million miles on the clock, capable of 25mph down hill with following wind. Used more oil than petrol - you could see the blue smoke from a mile away. Eventually died when over enthusiastic mate hit pothole while riding canal towpath - he could swim, bike could not. 1960 250 Matchless. Age 15 and three quarters. Ridden in circles in first gear around the back of house for 3 months awaiting 16th Birthday and driving licence. Day arrived, parents did not see me for a week. Fell off 4 times in first two weeks - elder brother (350 Matchless) pissed at mechanical workload. At first signs of rain electrics packed - learned benefits of WD40 and daily prayers to Saint Joseph Lucas. 1962 500 Norton 88SS. Age 17. Best Brit Bike ever, younger sibling of more common 650SS. Elder brother still pissed - with ageing Matchless and upcoming marriage he can't have one. No vibration, went like a rocket, best handling, best stopping bike of its era. No need to speak to Saint Joe again due to magneto ignition. Only fell off twice. First time required new l/h exhaust pipe. Second time one week after first, destroying new pipe. Welded together, subsequently had tendency to unscrew itself while on the move - very disconcerting and often thought I was being overtaken on the inside by midget on monkey bike. Never seen one before or since - why did I ever sell it - and for 90 quid!! 1965 Bultaco Sherpa. Age 24. Married now with sprog no.1 on way. Used in local off road trials to no great effect. Bike and rider so bad that fan club arrived at events with tow ropes in hand to drag both out of ditches/river beds. Eight months pregnant wife thought she could do better - still have picture of her seconds before riding into stone wall of derelict farm building. 1963 Norton 650SS. Age 28. Now with two sprogs and choice between comeback and food/first school uniform. Compromise resulted in arrival of basket case with conrod through crankcase. Many hours spent on engine rebuild in living room in front of fire - took so long through lack of cash became interesting talking point for visitors to home. Sold immediately on completion due to cashflow problems. Undeveloped film recording restoration for posterity thrown in dustbin by tidy wife. 1962 Velocette Venom. Age 29. Big mistake. Bike was ex racing special with Beasley frame. Brought up on Norton twins, what did I know about Velos? Bugger all as it turned out - could never get the thing to run. Sold to brain dead Velo enthusiast. 1989 K75S. The big comeback after 14 years at age 43 and first new purchase. Absolute cracker, best bike ever, never any problems, never fell off. Decided on BM based only on magazine road tests on assumption that test ride would be waste of time as I would have forgotten how to ride and gear change was on wrong side. Proved itself on ride back from dealers - 250 miles in November gale. Also proved I could ride after all. Toured Europe with wife to whom I had recently began to talk following episode with undeveloped film of 650SS restoration. 1991 K1. Age 45. Absolute cracker, best bike ever, except for barbecued left leg in summer. Proved wind tunnel design at 150 MPH on Nurburgrings one straight bit - after being past by Porches (OK, and a few VW Golfs and the occasional tour bus) on twisty bits. On same trip badly damaged when centre stand sunk in melting tar - K1 upside down in adjacent ditch, grown man on knees crying. Following day rode home to UK through snow storm! 1993 FJ1200ABS. Age 47. Absolute cracker, best Jap bike ever. Got straight swap for cosmetically challenged K1. Now able to tour two up again, took wife around Scotland in rain for two weeks. Foot slipped on seaweed prior to dismount waiting for Island ferry - pristine bike saved from death by quick thinking wife who caught it before it hit the deck. Have never said a cross word to her since. 1995 R1100RS. Age 48. Absoloootly the cracker of all time. Celebrated last remaining sprog leaving home (finally got message after changing locks) with purchase of new boxer. Reluctantly sold after posting overseas. 1995 R1100GS. Age 51. 3 day extended test ride in Mexico (see past mails). Wonderful bike which now has created a dilemma - I return home next week and look forward to full time biking again in 98. But will it be of the RS or GS flavour? Graham Pryce Bikeless in Mexico. MY BIKES! 1958 BSA Bantam D3. Rode around the local woods and fields 'till the police tapped me on the shoulder - told my dad I had committed 10 offenses, my mate who was riding at the time only had 9, my extra was 'aiding and abetting'. Got let off with a finger wagging - phew! 1967 Vespa 150 'Sprint' (hoho!) Bought in haste. Some people are fans but I found the small wheels, and engine on the rear axel line (but to one side) bloody dangerous. Fell off within a mile of buying it and many times afterwards - would wheelie without provocation and fall to the engine side. The only bike I've ever been hurt on (off) broke both arms arm. Touch wood. 1973 Yamaha DT175 Brilliant little trail bike but I used to think I was Malcolm Rathmell (trials star) and destroyed it. I still have it, been in pieces for 20 years with 8k on the clock. 1970 Lambretta TV175 (upped to 200cc) Hooligan scooter, not as unstable as Vespa as engine in line. Small wheels made it exiting though. 1978 Batavus GoGo V I bought this for my wife as a ride to work. She rode up our drive, tried turning round, fell off and never went near it again. 1958 BSA Bantam D3 Another one. In pieces for restoration. Might finish it one day. 1976 Honda CD175 Another brilliant little bike - if you squinted it almost looked like a BSA (chrome tank sides). toured the South West (of England) two up. Need for more power prompted... 1980 Honda CB250 Superdream Only new bike I've ever bought. Also toured on this but the only good thing about it was it was so awful I traded it after 8 months for... 1978 BMW R100RS (got there at last!) Bought it in 1980 and love it just as much today as I did then. Tried bricks when they came out but not to my taste so have stuck with this one ever since. Perfect (apart from the gearbox, brakes, clutch...) At the time I considered a Yamaha XS850, then new for the price I paid for a 2 year old BMW. How many 19 year old Yamahas do you see on the road? - I think I made the right choice. 1978 & 1979 Montesa Cota 348's A brace of Montesas. A matched pair - both in pieces. Not as big a list as some but look at the countries covered: UK, Italy, Japan, Holland, Germany and Spain. I've also got a Swedish car - better keep quiet about that though. Keep sending them in guys - I love it. Weird metallic burgundy paint with teal stripes-actually kind of attractive. Bike would quit running without notice, usually at night, on small backroads. Slower than anything this side of a Trail 90. With Conti Twins, you could drag EVERYTHING, on both sides of the bike. Crappy Honda chrome shocks with two settings....pogo spring or hardtail. Four big exhaust pipes, able to rust after a single washing. Starting the bike at anything less than 50 degree fareheit...forget it. Typical Honda propensity to mar every surface with idiot warning labels, wear helmet, don't speed, wipe butt, etc. Date: Fri, 12 Dec 1997 22:08:53 EST From: Trophytria Subject: Re: BMW: Bikes I've Owned *and* Crashed* to all the bikes i have owned before traveled in and out my door, a am glad you came along i dedicate this little dity to Pamela lee for she has great big $%^& 1974 suzuki rl 250 trials machine 1974 bultaco alpina My first street bike(had a ring collapse going down a big hill passing my brothers honda 750 at about 75 the piston was dang ugly 1979 honda cbx red headers a sound to die for(sold it and i still cry mself to sleep at night over this one 1977 big bore maico coffin tank and a scared rider wow what a combo 1982 yamaha vision a most excellant running twin rode from la to saint louis non stop and blew the engine along the way. lost lost pressure and that was all she wrote Fixed under warrenty 1982 gl500 silver wing looooooow budget 1986 bwmr65 the bike for life(at least right now) 1986 Cagive allazzura loud and fast repainted red of course 1986 HD 883 low and loud a lot of fun vibrated worse than the air compressor 1986 bmw r650 yes i had a matching pair 1985 bmw k100 about as much fun as riding a cinder block 1982 honda ascot ft500 thump thump 1964 bmw r60 work in progress and a money pit a deep deep money pit 1974 triump tr5t never owned anything british(the last time i do this) I may of left something out my thrity year old brain is starting to fail me greatly John
